About Children's Room

Children's Library provides access to quality early educational programming year round. This 21st century learning space for children and caregivers combines traditional library service with STREAM (science, technology, reading, engineering, art and math), early literacy and other activities.

  • Offers customized learning experiences for early learners, elementary learners and tweens.
  • Features materials, computers, events and much more for kids through sixth grade.
  • Provides an opportunity for children to experience the enjoyment of reading and the excitement of discovering knowledge and works of the imagination by providing a wide range of materials and activities.
  • Children and their care providers learn how to make the best use of a library and how to develop skills in the use of printed and electronic media.

The Children’s Library Services Staff has the responsibility to support the process of learning to read, and to promote books and other media for children by providing special events for children, such as storytelling and activities related to the library’s services and resources.

We invite you to explore this exciting space!

Children's Summer Reading Program 2020

Running from June 29th to August 11th, the Holyoke Public Library will be hosting our summer reading program on Beanstack! By logging how many minutes you read over the summer and participating in challenge activities, you have the chance to earn badges, tickets, and prizes! You'll be able to use the tickets you collect to enter into an end-of-summer raffle, where the library will be giving out bigger prizes such as gift cards, STEM activity kits, card games, and more!

In order to complete the reading challenge, you'll be tasked with earning several activity badges and reading a total of 15 hours over the summer - don't worry, that might sound like a lot, but it's really only about 20 minutes a day! You can read anything you want, from comic books to graphic novels to poetry to chapter books to biographies and more. And if you listen to an audiobook (or someone reads to you), you can count that as reading, too!

Does this sound too easy to you? Not a problem at all! Everybody completes the challenge once they've logged 15 hours of reading, but there are bonus badges and raffle tickets you can earn for logging up to 50 hours if you want to read more. It's completely optional, but it's a fun bonus for anyone who wants an extra challenge!

Register for the challenge on our Beanstack website here or by downloading the Beanstack Tracker app. The Children's Room is also offering an offline printed version (in English and Spanish) of the Children's Summer Reading Challenge for those unable to access the online platform. Please call 413-420-8105 to register for the offline program!
