Fact about the Library: Open to the public in 1902, the Holyoke Public Library is located
on a large city block 260' by 440'. The building, which covers about 25,251
square feet, is located toward the north of the lot. The building is of pure Greek design, and has a modified "T" shape.
Built of Indiana limestone and
light cream colored bricks, it has a tile roof. Like other Greek buildings, it
has the external appearance of a single story structure, but its interior has
two stories, a basement and a sub-basement.

Fact about the City:
Holyoke is the first planned industrial city in Western Massachusetts in Hampden
County. Situated in the Connecticut River Valley—also known as Pioneer Valley
because it was one of the first inland regions settled in New England. Holyoke
is bordered by West Springfield on the South,
Westfield, Southampton and Easthampton on the West, Northampton on the North,
and separated from South Hadley and Chicopee by the Connecticut River on the
East. It is 90 miles West of Boston; 34 miles North of Hartford, CT; and 142
miles from New York City. Holyoke is the third largest city in the pioneer
Valley.
